Military Soldier Appreciation Ceremony November 2009
During the month of November, the troop
demonstrated our appreciation of our armed services by honoring Matthews
resident Army Specialist Bill Rooney and his wife Kim for his loyalty and
dedication. In attendance was N.C. State Representative Jim Gulley, mebers of
the Matthews Fire & EMS, Former Mayor of Matthews Lee Myers, and current Mayor
Jim Taylor. The troop presented Bill with a flag flown over the U.S. Capital in
his honor, letters of proclomation from the honorable Sue Myrick; U.S.
House of Representatives, and lN.C. Governor Bev Purdue.
2009 Troop 413 Family Beach Camping Trip September 2009 Scouts, leaders, and their families
ventured to the shores of Huntington State Park in Pawley's Island, SC for a
weekend trip of fun in the sun. During the trip, a gourmet menu of sish kabobs
was prepared by Master Chef John Santanello and scouts relished in their victory
of defeating the adult leaders in a friendly game of volleyball. Throughout the
day, scouts enjoyed body surfing, kite flying, fishing, bike riding, wilderness
alligator excursions, and brotherhood.
2009 Lowes Motor Speedway Auto Fair September 2009 Twenty scouts from Troop 413 attended the
auto fair to learn more about the basic working mechanics of passenger vehicles,
safety systems, horsepower, preventive maintenance, and the upkeep. All of the
scouts came away with the auto mechanics merit badge.
2009 Sliding Rock Summer Trip August 2009 Our Troop attended the bone chilling waters
of Sliding Rock in Henderson County, NC and tour several areas of the Pisgah
Forest region then completed a service project.
2009 Philmont Trip July 2009 Twelve members of our Troop attended the
Philmont High Adventure Scout Ranch In New Mexico.
2009 Summer Camp at Camp Grimes in Dysartsville, NC July 2009 The troop takes on the South Mountains for
a week of Summer Camp with 56 Scouts!
Court of Honor Ceremony June 2009 Scouts and adult leaders come together for
rank advancements, merit badge presentation, and service year awards.
2009 Canoe Trip
April 2009 The troop takes a leisurely stroll down the
river near Columbia, SC as part of a 3-day overnighter.

The troop welcomed our new crossover scouts with this initiation into overnight
Boy Scout camping. Many scouts completed several rank advancement requirements
via a 5-mile hike, a 1-mile compass course and cooking activities. The boys also
lashed an impressive rope swing.
2009 Barbeque Fund Raiser March 2009 Scouts, parents, and leaders braved the
harsh elements of cold temperatures and heavy rains for 24 hours to cook our
prized BBQ for our annual fund raiser.
2008 Scouting For Food Drive
April 2008
Our troop participated in the collection of food for the 2008 Loaves and Fishes
food drive. Scouts from across Mecklenburg County collected over 8 tons of food
for needy families.
2008 Shotgun Trip to Camp Grimes March 2008
Our Scoutmaster Richard Cline conducted a weekend outing to Camp Grimes where
scouts earned their shotgun shooting merit badge and learned the critical
aspects of gun safety.
